Nine Souls is a hand-drawn 2D action platformer that combines cyberpunk elements and traditional Eastern fantasy. Set in the mysterious realm of New Kunlun, you follow the story of Yi, a resurrected hero who sets out to defeat the ancient rulers of this world, the Souls 9. Nine Souls is a 2D handheld Metroidvania that skillfully combines intense Sekiro-style turn-based combat and exploration. Developer Red Candle Games describes the setting as “Taopunk,” a fusion of Asian mythology and Taoist lore. I’ve written before about why you should play Nine Souls, and now it’s here with an official review. It's safe to say: Nine Souls may not be one of the best games of 2024, but it's one of the best 2D games of the modern era. At the beginning of the game, Yi is betrayed by his teacher and almost killed. However, over time, he is rescued and gradually healed by the Fusang Factory, which the Solarians use to power their advanced technology. After awakening after centuries, Yi sets out to eliminate the remaining Nine Souls in order to uncover the truth behind his betrayal and the deep mystery that unfolded while he slept.
