As a fan of Metroid, Castlevania, and all things Metroidvania, it’s hard not to feel like Hollow Knight’s massive success ushered in a “Golden Age” for the subgenre. The release rate for official Metroidvanias is incredibly high, with a new entry arriving about once a month. In fact, the result of Metroidvania’s glory days is that the genre now feels like a flood. While the novelty of a Metroidvania used to be enough to keep a game interesting, players now have plenty of options, and new entries are willing to offer something new to stand out. ExoGenesis Studios — a new developer in the industry with veterans from well-known studios like Owlcat Games, Blizzard, and even Disney — is the latest to join the effort to make the next big Metroidvania happen with INAYAH - Life After Gods. Following the success of its Kickstarter campaign, INAYAH is now available on PC ahead of its summer launch, which begs the question of whether it’s worth picking up while keeping up with all the great features.Inayah Life After Gods is a stunning game with stunning hand-drawn graphics and fluid animations that, when firing on all cylinders, is satisfying and focuses on the combat and platforming aspects. But it’s sometimes disappointing to see its brilliance and beautiful presentation in the game marred by a number of other poor design decisions regarding the progression economy, gate power, environmental change, map layout, and boss design. Unfortunately, most of these are systemic issues that prevent INAYAH from being anything more than that. It’s not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s not a very good game either.
